Thank you for visiting the SPHS Band and Orchestra webpage! The upcoming school year promises to be e
xciting and action-packed, for both band and orchestra students. This is the band and orchestra boosters’
sanctioned online source for band and orchestra information, but please remember that this calendar, which
will be updated regularly, is based on Mr. Powell’s official calendar, which is located on the wall next to
his desk in the band room.
|Band camp runs this year from August 4th through the 8th, and the schedule,
permission slips, and medical forms are all posted on this page. If you haven’t already submitted
your forms for band camp, now is the time! The show the students will be performing is being constructed
based on the number of students who will be performing. Additionally, the plans for band camp meals, etc.
are based on the number of people attending, so it’s critical that any student planning to attend be
If you’re uncertain about attending band camp, let me take this opportunity to
encourage you not to miss it. Our marching band director, R. Thomas Powell, has developed a band camp
program that provides the foundational instruction for students to perform during marching band season,
develops musicianship in the students, and builds camaraderie. Friendships that begin at band camp last
through high school and beyond. Students new to the school start the first day of school with nearly 100
new friends, freshman through senior. The marching band experience is the pinnacle of the instrumental
program at the high school, and students who don’t participate miss out on a tremendous opportunity.
Another terrific upcoming event is the DCI show at West Chester University on July 30th, open to both new
students and returning students. This is a great opportunity to be inspired by the caliber of some superb
marching bands and also provides a chance for students to get a taste of what’s coming during the school
year. The buses have been reserved, and the permission slip and information are posted here on our webpage.
Be sure to reserve your spot!
Once band camp is over, the students begin regular marching band rehearsals (several each week) that
continue through the end of marching season, in early November. Remember: each student has a unique
position and part to perform in the show that can’t be filled by anyone else. In order for the band to
attain its maximum level of excellence, each student needs to attend every practice. Please make sure you
refer regularly to the rehearsal schedule and plan such things as vacations and doctors’ appointments around
the band’s schedule.
The program would not function without financial support and
commitment of many volunteers. A 501 ( c ) non-profit organization, the Boosters organization gladly
accepts tax-deductible donations. The year kicks off with fund raisers such as the car wash, grocery
card sales and sub sales, and you can also designate the Booster program as a recipient of donations
through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). If you are a federal government employee, or have friends
or relatives who are, please consider marking your CFC donation to SPHS Band and Orchestra Boosters.
Any employee working in the Washington DC or Baltimore City, Accomack, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Caroline,
Carroll, Cecil, Dorchester, Harford, Howard, Kent, Northampton, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico,
and Worcester counties area will find us in the CFC catalog that will distributed later this fall at your
My youngest daughter will be a senior this year, and this marks my eighth and final year as a band mom
and member of the SPHS BOB Boosters. Being with the kids is always enjoyable, and every parent who gets
involved will tell you of the strong friendships that were built as a result. Without the commitment and
involvement of parents, the instrumental music program at the high school would not be able to function as
it does. I encourage every parent to actively participate, join the Boosters (you can find the form on the
website), and dedicate time by chaperoning, helping with hospitality, coming to the sub sales, working on a
committee… the opportunities are endless and there’s something for everyone!
I’m looking forward to seeing you all at our first booster meeting of the year, which will occur right
before the band concert on Friday the 8th of August. Please feel free to email me any time at
firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or just want more information about the program.
